Summer Camp
This year is my 40th birthday, and I didn’t really feel like celebrating it big. No big party, no complicated plans. I just wanted to be by the ocean with my family and whatever friends wanted to be there. I didn’t want to put any pressure on anyone either. If you come, you come. If not, it’s okay.
About a month before my birthday, I had a pretty incredible surprise. Ceilidh showed up at the door with a big Crust box. Inside was a brand-new Crust Evasion frameset.
I couldn’t believe it.
It took quite a bit of effort from her, and from Crust, to make it happen. Apparently the frame was sold out, so they had to get one back from a shop and then somehow get it all the way down to the South of France. Or something like that. The important part is that suddenly there was a Crust Evasion sitting in front of me.
And luckily, I already had pretty much everything I needed to build it.
A few weeks later, we packed up the whole family and drove seven hours across France to the ocean. We were meeting my friend Nico and his family, who had just welcomed a new baby.
The plan was basically no plan.
The girls spent the week surfing and having the best time. We were by the ocean, taking things slowly, with nowhere we really needed to be.
Hossegor in the summer is also one of those places where somehow everyone from the skate, BMX and surf worlds ends up at some point. So without really organising anything, I bumped into a lot of old friends from BMX along the way.
Arnaud and Momo from Sandwich Sacoche were there too.
In the end, it was exactly how I wanted to turn 40.
